Venezuela and China sign phytosanitary protocol for direct mung bean exports

In May 2025, Venezuela's then Foreign Minister, Yván Gil, and the then head and Communist Party Committee secretary of China's General Administration of Customs, Sun Meijun, signed a phytosanitary protocol agreement allowing the direct export of Venezuelan mung beans to the Chinese market.

The agreement establishes the sanitary and technical conditions needed for mung beans produced in Venezuela to enter directly into one of the largest and most demanding markets in the world, without intermediaries.

According to 2024 figures, Venezuelan mung bean exports reach 100,000 tons per year. Agricultural authorities highlighted the agreement as a significant opportunity for producers in the country's center-west region, as part of broader efforts to diversify non-oil agricultural exports.
